Subject: FW: [aia150champions-l] AIA Staten Island proposal

Hi Gus,

I am forwarding this because I thought the top “story” was an interesting and pertinent one to your committee’s efforts to save the cigar factories.  Perhaps David could be a good resource.

Subject: [aia150champions-l] AIA Staten Island proposal

Greetings,

I am the Staten Island, NY Chapter Champion. We recently completed a study and proposal to preserve a Landmarked house that was purchased by a developer, prior to its landmark status, with the purpose of demolishing it. The Mayor of the City of New York asked AIA Staten Island to help save the structure while at the same time ensuring that the developer would still get a reasonable return on his investment. The process included neighborhood and civic association input, as well as closely working with the Department of City Planning, the Department of Buildings and the NYC Landmarks Commission. The Chapter’s schematic plan was accepted and praised by all. The house was saved, the site will be developed further in an acceptable and low impact way, and the neighborhood has been spared a bad development that would have been out of context and character.  Would this project be eligible as our AIA 150 initiative, even without applying for a grant?

Sincerely,

Dear Zach,

Your question is a good one.  We know that blueprint funds cannot be used for architect fees but I will need to check with our finance and legal staff to see if student awards are allowable.

Thank you,

  David

A part of our 150 initiative we will be inviting a student competition open to students / studios at our nearby universities.  The competition would be juried and presented to the community at our annual state conference.  Could a portion of the AIA Grant funds be used as prize money for the students?  We would look to match locally what we set in the grant budget for the competition.

Thanks
